Barcelona Pesach Tour - Illuminated Haggadah
Special Passover tour from 1st to 30th April
In the early 14th century, Barcelona, as a royal capital and a key hub of Mediterranean trade, fostered an urban atmosphere receptive to the latest artistic trends. During this period, the city's workshops became highly active in producing Haggadot—manuscripts detailing the Passover Seder—commissioned by families from Barcelona's Jewish quarter and other Jewish communities. Both Jewish and Christian artists contributed to their creation, drawing from shared artistic styles and common iconographic motifs.
The illuminated Haggadot produced in the Catalan workshops are the most exceptional artistic creations of the Jewish cultural legacy. As a result of the expulsion of 1492 and the previous attacks, some Jewish families took these works with them, spreading Catalan Gothic throughout Europe and preserving these pieces to this day.
On this special Passover tour, we will walk the streets of the Old Jewish Quarter, learning about the most important figures of the Jewish community and their relationships with their Christian neighbours. We will gain an in-depth understanding of the history of the Haggadot produced in Barcelona and how they travelled to the most important libraries in the world.
